Son & Sand Retreat Center is a ministry of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Ocean City, Maryland. Since its beginning in the summer of 1995, we have hosted guests from Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Minnesota, Ohio, Iowa and Finland. From 1995-1999 it was known as St. Peter's Youth Retreat Program. In 1999, a NAME THAT??? contest was held inviting all youth groups to participate. The youth group or organization submitting the winning entry received a free weekend at the beach. The winning entry was submitted by St. Peter's in Hampstead, Maryland and the new name became Son & Sand Retreat. In the beginning, our mission was to provide youth of the Delaware/Maryland Synod with a positive encounter with the church of Jesus Christ by helping them understand they can be FED by God's people everywhere. The Sunday School and Nursery areas doubled as the retreat center facilities from 1995-2007. The retreat center was offered from June thru August but was closed for Vacation bible School and the Peach Festival. The space provided for retreats include 3 classrooms, nursery, a small kitchen, men & women's bathrooms and a shower room with 2 showers.
In 2005, Paul Grahe became the new director and called upon the members of the congregation to become Son & Sand Greeters. They were originally called HOSTS. During 2008 thru 2009, the retreat center was not available due to construction of a new facility to house the new retreat center, Community Life Center, church offices, and Sunday School classrooms. In April 2010, the new Son & Sand Retreat Center opened its doors for year-round use by youth , adults (men &/or women), congregational councils, Confirmation, etc. Due to the year-round status, several meetings were held to review requirements and request additional volunteers to serve as Son & Sand Greeters. The retreat center currently has 14 Son & Sand Greeters.
